How to Write a For-and-Against Essay: The Role of Technology in Modern Life
A for-and-against essay is one of the most common writing tasks at Cambridge B2 First (FCE) level. In this type of essay, you explore both sides of an argument in a balanced, objective way before reaching a reasoned personal conclusion. This essay type appears frequently in academic contexts, workplace reports, and examination settings. The topic of technology in modern life is particularly relevant, as it affects almost every aspect of how we work, communicate, learn, and spend our leisure time.
In a for-and-against essay, your goal is not to be one-sided. Instead, you must present the advantages and disadvantages of a topic fairly, using formal vocabulary, linking devices, and impersonal structures to guide your reader through a well-organised argument.
Essential Writing Rules & Sentence Structure
1. Organise Your Essay into Clear Paragraphs
A well-structured B2 for-and-against essay typically follows this four-paragraph plan:
- Paragraph 1 — Introduction: Introduce the topic broadly and state that both sides will be examined. Do not give your personal opinion here.
- Paragraph 2 — Advantages: Present two developed advantages with supporting examples or evidence.
- Paragraph 3 — Disadvantages: Present two developed disadvantages with supporting examples or evidence.
- Paragraph 4 — Conclusion: Summarise both sides and give a balanced, reasoned personal verdict.
2. Write a Strong Introductory Sentence
Your introduction should present the topic in a broad, engaging way without immediately taking sides. Use impersonal structures such as It is widely acknowledged that... or In recent decades, it has become increasingly clear that... to establish a formal, objective tone from the outset.
3. Use Topic Sentences to Begin Each Paragraph
Every body paragraph must begin with a clear topic sentence that signals the focus of that paragraph. This helps your reader follow your argument with ease.
- There are several notable advantages associated with the widespread use of technology.
- Despite these benefits, technology also presents a number of significant drawbacks.
4. Use Passive Structures for an Impersonal, Formal Tone
In formal essays, avoid writing People say that... or Everyone knows that... Instead, use passive or impersonal constructions to sound more academic and objective.
- It is widely argued that technology has transformed the way people communicate.
- It has been suggested that excessive screen time may have a negative impact on mental health.
- Technology is generally considered to be one of the defining features of modern society.
5. Punctuate Discourse Markers Correctly
When a sentence adverb or discourse marker begins a sentence, it must be followed by a comma. This is a very common error at B2 level.
- Furthermore, technology has enabled people to access information instantly.
- Nevertheless, there are those who believe that this dependence is harmful.
- Consequently, younger generations may struggle to develop face-to-face communication skills.
6. Use Concession Clauses to Show Balance
Concession clauses are essential in for-and-against essays. They show that you can acknowledge the opposing view before presenting your own. Study these patterns:
- While it is true that technology improves efficiency, it can also create a culture of dependency.
- Despite the fact that many people rely on smartphones, there are valid concerns about privacy.
- Although digital communication is convenient, it cannot replace meaningful human interaction.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
The connectors below are essential for producing a well-organised, cohesive B2 essay. Study each one carefully, paying attention to its function and position in the sentence.
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Furthermore | Adding a related point (formal) | Furthermore, technology has made remote working a practical reality for millions of people. |
| Moreover | Adding a stronger or additional point | Moreover, access to online education has expanded opportunities for learners worldwide. |
| In addition to this | Introducing a supplementary argument | In addition to this, digital tools have greatly improved healthcare outcomes. |
| Nevertheless | Contrasting — despite what was just said | Nevertheless, one must consider the potential risks of excessive technology use. |
| Nonetheless | Contrasting — acknowledging a point but moving forward | Nonetheless, the benefits of technology arguably outweigh its disadvantages. |
| Whereas | Comparing two contrasting ideas in one sentence | Whereas technology can isolate individuals, it can equally bring communities together. |
| Despite / In spite of | Conceding a point (followed by a noun or gerund) | Despite its many advantages, technology is not without its drawbacks. |
| On the one hand... on the other hand | Presenting two contrasting perspectives | On the one hand, technology saves time. On the other hand, it can cause distraction. |
| Consequently | Showing a result or consequence (formal) | Consequently, many employees now experience difficulty switching off from work. |
| As a consequence | Showing a result (slightly more emphatic) | As a consequence, traditional forms of communication are gradually becoming obsolete. |
| For this reason | Explaining a cause-effect relationship | For this reason, it is essential that children are taught responsible technology use. |
| Taking all factors into consideration | Summarising before a conclusion | Taking all factors into consideration, technology remains an indispensable tool in modern life. |
| On balance | Giving a balanced final verdict | On balance, the advantages of technology appear to outweigh the disadvantages. |

[INTRODUCTION]
It is widely acknowledged that technology has fundamentally transformed the way modern society functions. From healthcare and education to communication and commerce, digital innovation has become an integral part of daily life. However, the question of whether this transformation is entirely beneficial remains a matter of considerable debate.
[ADVANTAGES — Paragraph 2]
There are several compelling arguments in favour of technology. First and foremost, it has greatly improved access to information. Students and professionals alike are able to conduct research, attend virtual lectures, and collaborate across continents with remarkable ease. Furthermore, medical technology has extended life expectancy and enhanced the quality of healthcare worldwide, which is undoubtedly a significant achievement.
[DISADVANTAGES — Paragraph 3]
Despite these clear benefits, technology is not without its drawbacks. Many researchers have expressed concern that excessive screen time may contribute to social isolation and poor mental health, particularly among young people. Moreover, the rise of automation has led to widespread job losses in several industries, raising serious questions about economic inequality.
[CONCLUSION]
Taking all factors into consideration, it is evident that technology brings both considerable benefits and notable challenges. On balance, however, it would appear that society stands to gain more than it loses, provided that technology is used responsibly and ethically.

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Technology is very useful, it helps people communicate faster and more efficiently.
✅ Comma splice error — two independent clauses cannot be joined with only a comma.
Write instead: Technology is extremely useful. It enables people to communicate more quickly and efficiently. Or: Technology is extremely useful, as it enables people to communicate more quickly and efficiently.
❌ Despite of the many advantages, technology can also be harmful.
✅ 'Despite' is never followed by 'of'. Use 'despite + noun/gerund' OR 'in spite of + noun/gerund'.
Write instead: Despite the many advantages, technology can also be harmful. Or: In spite of the many advantages, technology can also be harmful.
❌ Nevertheless people are becoming too dependent on their devices.
✅ A comma is required after a sentence adverb when it begins a sentence.
Write instead: Nevertheless, people are becoming increasingly dependent on their devices.
❌ Technology has many benefits but it can't replace the human touch and people don't always realise this.
✅ Avoid contractions (can't, don't) in formal essays. This also creates a run-on sentence.
Write instead: Although technology offers many benefits, it cannot replace genuine human interaction. This is a fact that is frequently overlooked.
❌ In spite of technology has improved communication, many people feel more isolated.
✅ 'In spite of' must be followed by a noun phrase or gerund — NOT a full clause with a verb.
Write instead: In spite of the improvements technology has brought to communication, many people feel more isolated than ever. Or use although for a full clause: Although technology has improved communication, many people feel more isolated.
