How to Write a For-and-Against Essay: The Importance of Work-Life Balance
A for-and-against essay presents two balanced perspectives on a single issue before arriving at a reasoned personal conclusion. This genre is a core requirement at Cambridge B2 First (FCE) level and appears frequently in professional and academic contexts. Rather than simply listing opinions, a strong for-and-against essay evaluates evidence on both sides and demonstrates critical thinking.
The topic of work-life balance — the degree to which a person's professional and personal life are in healthy proportion — is highly relevant in today's world. You may be asked to write about this subject in an exam, in a workplace report, or as part of a university application essay. Mastering this topic will help you practise sophisticated connectors, formal register, and balanced argumentation — all essential B2 skills.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. Thesis Statement
Begin your essay with a clear, general opening that introduces the topic and signals that both sides will be explored. Avoid expressing a strong personal opinion in the introduction of a for-and-against essay.
Example: "The question of whether employees should prioritise their careers over their personal lives has generated considerable debate in recent years."
2. Topic Sentences
Each body paragraph must begin with a clear topic sentence that signals the paragraph's main argument. The supporting sentences that follow must expand on, explain, or provide evidence for that argument.
Example topic sentence (advantages paragraph): "One of the principal benefits of maintaining a healthy work-life balance is the positive impact it has on mental health."
3. Concession Clauses
Use concession structures to acknowledge the opposing point of view before presenting your own. This demonstrates sophistication and balance.
- Although long working hours may increase short-term productivity, they frequently result in burnout over time.
- While it is true that career ambition is admirable, it should not come at the expense of personal wellbeing.
- Despite the fact that some industries demand long hours, most employees benefit from clearly defined boundaries.
4. Passive Structures for Formal Register
In formal essays, use passive constructions to create an objective, impersonal tone. Avoid first-person statements such as "I think" or "I believe" in the main body of the essay.
- It is widely argued that overworking leads to a decline in productivity.
- It has been demonstrated that employees who rest adequately perform more effectively.
- Considerable importance is placed on the ability to disconnect from work responsibilities.
5. Punctuation with Discourse Markers
Sentence adverbs and connectors that begin a clause must be followed by a comma. Failure to include this comma is one of the most common B2 punctuation errors.
❌ Furthermore employees who rest adequately are more productive.
✅ Furthermore, employees who rest adequately are more productive.
6. Paragraph Organisation for a For-and-Against Essay
- Paragraph 1 — Introduction: Introduce the topic broadly. Do not give your opinion yet.
- Paragraph 2 — Advantages / Arguments in favour: Present 1–2 strong points with supporting explanation or example.
- Paragraph 3 — Disadvantages / Arguments against: Present 1–2 balanced counter-arguments.
- Paragraph 4 — Conclusion: Summarise both sides and give your reasoned personal verdict.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
The following connectors are essential for writing a well-organised, sophisticated B2 for-and-against essay. Study the function and example sentence for each one.

| Whereas | Directly contrasts two ideas in one sentence | Whereas some employees thrive under pressure, others find it deeply damaging. |
| On the one hand... on the other hand | Presents two opposing sides clearly | On the one hand, ambition drives success; on the other hand, it can lead to exhaustion. |
| Despite the fact that | Introduces a concession with a full clause | Despite the fact that remote working offers flexibility, it can blur the boundaries between work and home life. |
| Consequently | Shows a result or effect | Consequently, many companies are now introducing wellbeing programmes for their staff. |

Model Writing Sample: The Importance of Work-Life Balance
The following is a complete B2 for-and-against essay (approximately 170 words). Read it carefully and study the annotations in brackets.
[Introduction — introduces topic, no personal opinion]
The question of whether people should dedicate themselves entirely to their careers or strive for a healthier work-life balance has become increasingly relevant in modern society. While professional success is widely admired, it is important to consider the broader consequences of overworking.
[Advantages paragraph — two supporting points with explanation]
On the one hand, maintaining a healthy work-life balance brings considerable benefits. It is widely argued that employees who rest adequately are significantly more productive during working hours. Furthermore, a balanced lifestyle reduces the risk of stress-related illness, which benefits both the individual and the organisation as a whole.
[Disadvantages paragraph — counter-argument acknowledged fairly]
On the other hand, some argue that prioritising personal time may limit career advancement. In highly competitive industries, those who work longer hours may gain an advantage over their colleagues. Nevertheless, this short-term gain often comes at the cost of long-term health and motivation.
[Conclusion — balanced verdict with personal stance]
Taking all factors into consideration, it would appear that a balanced approach is the most sustainable option. On balance, organisations and individuals alike would benefit from treating rest and personal fulfilment not as luxuries, but as essential components of a productive working life.

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Work-life balance is important, it helps people stay healthy and productive.
✅ Work-life balance is important because it helps people stay healthy and productive. — This is a comma splice: two independent clauses cannot be joined with only a comma. Use a conjunction such as because, as, or since, or use a full stop to separate the clauses.
❌ Furthermore employees who take regular breaks perform better.
✅ Furthermore, employees who take regular breaks perform better. — Sentence adverbs and discourse markers such as Furthermore, However, Consequently, and Nevertheless must always be followed by a comma when they begin a sentence.
❌ Despite of the fact that long hours are common, they are not always productive.
✅ Despite the fact that long hours are common, they are not always productive. — Despite is never followed by of. Use despite + noun/gerund or despite the fact that + clause. Note that in spite of functions identically but uses the preposition of: in spite of the long hours.
❌ I think that people should try and get a good work-life balance because it's really good for you.
✅ It is widely considered that maintaining a healthy work-life balance has significant benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing. — In a formal for-and-against essay, avoid contractions (it's, don't, can't), informal vocabulary (really good, get), and first-person opinions in the main body. Use passive constructions and formal vocabulary instead.
