Writing an Opinion Essay: The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle Choices
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a B2-level opinion essay on the topic of healthy lifestyle choices. Opinion essays are a core genre in the Cambridge B2 First (FCE) examination. You are expected to state a clear position, support it with developed arguments and relevant examples, acknowledge an opposing viewpoint, and reach a balanced conclusion.
This type of writing appears in many real-life contexts, including newspaper columns, student magazines, online forums, and academic coursework. Mastering the opinion essay will help you communicate complex ideas persuasively and precisely in both examinations and professional settings.
Essential Writing Rules & Sentence Structure
1. The Thesis Statement
Your opening paragraph must contain a clear thesis statement — a sentence that directly states your opinion or position on the topic. At B2 level, this should be expressed using formal vocabulary, not informal phrases.
❌ I think healthy living is really important and everyone should do it.
✅ It is widely argued that adopting a healthy lifestyle is one of the most significant decisions an individual can make for their long-term wellbeing.
2. Topic Sentences
Each body paragraph must begin with a topic sentence that introduces the main idea of that paragraph. This signals to the reader what argument you are about to develop.
Example: One of the principal benefits of regular physical activity is its positive effect on mental health.
3. Developing Arguments with Evidence and Examples
At B2 level, a simple statement of opinion is not sufficient. You must support each argument with a reason, an example, or a consequence. Use cause-and-effect connectors such as consequently, as a result, and therefore to link your ideas logically.
4. The Counter-Argument and Concession
A strong B2 opinion essay acknowledges the opposing viewpoint before refuting it. Use concession structures to demonstrate critical thinking:
- While it is true that... , it can be argued that...
- Despite the fact that... , the evidence suggests that...
- Although some people believe... , this view overlooks...
5. Passive Structures for Formal Register
Opinion essays at B2 level require a formal, impersonal tone. Avoid writing I think or I feel repeatedly. Instead, use passive and impersonal structures to add authority:
- It is widely believed that...
- It has been demonstrated that...
- Research has shown that...
- It is generally accepted that...
6. Punctuation with Discourse Markers
A very common B2 error is failing to punctuate sentence adverbs correctly. When a connective adverb opens a sentence, it must be followed by a comma.
❌ Nevertheless many people continue to make poor dietary choices.
✅ Nevertheless, many people continue to make poor dietary choices.
Similarly, avoid comma splices — joining two independent clauses with only a comma instead of a conjunction or full stop.
❌ Exercise improves mental health, it reduces stress significantly.
✅ Exercise improves mental health. Moreover, it reduces stress significantly.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
The connectors below are appropriate for B2 opinion essays. Use them to link ideas within and between paragraphs, and to signal contrast, addition, cause, and conclusion.
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Furthermore | Adding a stronger or additional point | Furthermore, a balanced diet has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic disease. |
| Moreover | Adding an equally important point | Moreover, regular exercise contributes significantly to emotional wellbeing. |
| In addition to this | Adding supplementary information | In addition to this, adequate sleep is essential for physical recovery. |
| Nevertheless | Introducing a contrast or concession | Nevertheless, changing deeply ingrained habits can be extremely challenging. |
| Nonetheless | Conceding a point while maintaining a position | Nonetheless, the long-term benefits of a healthy lifestyle far outweigh the difficulties. |
| Whereas | Contrasting two opposing ideas in one sentence | Whereas processed food is convenient, it is frequently high in harmful additives. |
| Despite the fact that | Conceding a point formally | Despite the fact that many people are aware of health risks, they continue to smoke. |
| In spite of | Conceding a point (followed by a noun or gerund) | In spite of the available information, unhealthy eating habits remain widespread. |
| Consequently | Showing a result or consequence | Consequently, rates of obesity have risen considerably over the past two decades. |
| Therefore | Indicating a logical conclusion or result | Therefore, governments should invest more in public health education programmes. |
| On the other hand | Presenting a contrasting viewpoint | On the other hand, critics argue that personal freedom should not be restricted. |
| Taking everything into account | Summarising before a final conclusion | Taking everything into account, the advantages of healthy living are undeniable. |
Model Writing Sample: The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle Choices
The following model essay is written to Cambridge B2 First (FCE) standard. Read it carefully and study the annotations in bold brackets.
[Opening paragraph — Hook and Thesis Statement]
In today's fast-paced society, the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices is frequently underestimated. It is widely accepted that decisions regarding diet, physical activity, and sleep have a profound impact not only on physical health, but also on mental wellbeing. In my view, adopting a healthier lifestyle is not merely advisable — it is essential.
[Body Paragraph 1 — First Argument with Development]
To begin with, regular physical exercise has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Furthermore, it is well established that exercise releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce stress considerably. Consequently, individuals who exercise regularly tend to report higher levels of overall satisfaction with their lives.
[Body Paragraph 2 — Second Argument with Development]
In addition to this, a nutritious and balanced diet plays an equally significant role. Whereas processed and fast foods offer convenience, they are frequently high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. In contrast, a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein has been linked to improved cognitive function and greater energy levels throughout the day.
[Body Paragraph 3 — Counter-Argument and Refutation]
Nevertheless, it is acknowledged that maintaining healthy habits can be challenging, particularly for individuals with demanding work schedules or limited financial resources. Despite this, a range of affordable and time-efficient strategies — such as home-cooked meals and short daily walks — are accessible to most people.
[Conclusion — Balanced Verdict]
In conclusion, taking everything into account, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle are both substantial and far-reaching. While obstacles certainly exist, they should not be regarded as insurmountable. It is therefore strongly recommended that individuals make informed, consistent choices in order to safeguard their long-term health.
Word count: 248 words (This model is slightly extended to show full paragraph development. For the FCE exam, aim for 140–190 words in a more concise version.)

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Comma Splice (Joining Two Independent Clauses with Only a Comma)
❌ A healthy diet improves concentration, it also boosts energy levels throughout the day.
✅ A healthy diet improves concentration. Moreover, it boosts energy levels throughout the day.
Two complete sentences cannot be joined with a comma alone. Use a full stop and a discourse marker, or a coordinating conjunction such as and.
Mistake 2: Missing Comma After a Sentence Adverb
❌ Furthermore regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.
✅ Furthermore, regular exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Sentence adverbs and discourse markers (Furthermore, Nevertheless, Consequently, However, Therefore) must always be followed by a comma when they open a sentence.
Mistake 3: Confusing 'Despite' and 'In Spite Of' with 'Despite the Fact That'
❌ Despite many people know the risks, they continue to eat unhealthily.
✅ Despite the fact that many people know the risks, they continue to eat unhealthily.
Despite and in spite of must be followed by a noun or gerund (–ing form), NOT by a clause with a subject and verb. To use a full clause, write despite the fact that or although.
Mistake 4: Register Inconsistency (Mixing Formal and Informal Language)
❌ Loads of people don't exercise enough, which is a big problem these days.
✅ A significant proportion of the population does not engage in sufficient physical activity, which represents a serious public health concern.
In a formal opinion essay, avoid informal vocabulary (loads of, big, these days, don't) and contractions. Use formal equivalents and full verb forms throughout.
Mistake 5: Overusing 'I Think' Without Formal Alternatives
❌ I think that healthy eating is important. I think governments should help people.
✅ It is widely believed that healthy eating is of great importance. It is therefore argued that governments have a responsibility to support their citizens in this regard.
Vary your expressions of opinion using impersonal structures to maintain a formal, academic tone.
