How to Write a For-and-Against Essay: The Impact of Social Media on Society
A for-and-against essay is one of the most common writing tasks at B2 level. In this type of essay, you present the advantages and disadvantages of a particular topic in a balanced, organised way before reaching a reasoned conclusion. This is not simply a list — you must develop each point with explanation and, where possible, a brief example.
You will encounter this task type in the Cambridge B2 First (FCE) Writing Paper, in academic coursework, and in professional contexts where balanced analysis is required. The topic of social media is particularly relevant, as it affects communication, relationships, mental health, business, and politics worldwide.
A strong for-and-against essay at B2 level includes:
- A clear introductory paragraph that presents the topic without stating your personal opinion
- One or two body paragraphs presenting the advantages, with development and examples
- One or two body paragraphs presenting the disadvantages, with development and examples
- A concluding paragraph that offers a balanced, reasoned personal stance
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. Write an Objective Introduction
Your opening paragraph should introduce the topic clearly and explain why it is worth discussing. Do not give your personal opinion here — save that for the conclusion.
Example: "In recent years, social media has become an inseparable part of everyday life for millions of people around the world. While many regard it as a positive development, others believe its consequences for society are deeply concerning."
2. Use Strong Topic Sentences
Begin each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence that signals whether you are discussing advantages or disadvantages.
Advantage paragraph: "On the one hand, social media offers significant benefits in terms of communication and the free flow of information."
Disadvantage paragraph: "On the other hand, the widespread use of social media has been linked to a number of serious social problems."
3. Develop Each Point with Evidence or Examples
At B2, you must explain your points, not simply list them. After stating a point, ask yourself: Why? How? For example?
Weak: "Social media is good for communication."
Stronger: "Social media enables individuals to maintain contact with friends and relatives across the globe instantly and at no cost, which would have been impossible just two decades ago."
4. Use Passive Structures for an Impersonal, Formal Tone
For-and-against essays require a formal, impersonal register. Avoid using "I think" in the body paragraphs. Instead, use passive or impersonal constructions.
- "It is widely argued that..."
- "It has been suggested that..."
- "Social media platforms have been criticised for..."
- "Young people are reported to spend an average of..."
5. Use Concession Clauses
A concession clause acknowledges the opposite view before returning to your main point. This demonstrates sophisticated thinking and is highly valued at B2.
"Although social media has undoubtedly improved global communication, it cannot be denied that it has also contributed to the spread of misinformation."
"Despite the many advantages social media offers, its negative impact on mental health should not be underestimated."
6. Punctuate Discourse Markers Correctly
Sentence adverbs such as Furthermore, However, Nevertheless, and Consequently must be followed by a comma when they begin a sentence.
❌ "Furthermore social media encourages political participation."
✅ "Furthermore, social media encourages political participation."
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
The following connectors are essential for writing a well-structured, cohesive for-and-against essay at B2 level. Learn the function of each connector and practise using it in full sentences.
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| On the one hand | Introduces the first side of an argument (advantages) | On the one hand, social media allows individuals to share ideas with a global audience. |

| Furthermore | Adds an additional point in the same direction | Furthermore, social media has proven to be an invaluable tool for small businesses. |
| Moreover | Adds a stronger, more significant point | Moreover, it has revolutionised the way news and information are distributed worldwide. |
| In addition to this | Introduces a supplementary point | In addition to this, social media platforms have given marginalised communities a voice. |
| Nevertheless | Introduces a concession — admits an opposing point but continues with the main argument | Nevertheless, the potential harm caused by online harassment must be acknowledged. |
| Nonetheless | Similar to 'nevertheless'; slightly more formal | Nonetheless, the advantages of social media in education remain considerable. |
| However | Introduces a contrasting idea or complication | However, it is important to consider the significant risks associated with data privacy. |
| Whereas | Contrasts two different situations or facts within one sentence | Whereas older generations tend to use social media for staying in contact, younger users often treat it as a primary news source. |
| Despite the fact that | Concedes a point while maintaining the main argument | Despite the fact that social media connects people globally, it can also lead to increased feelings of loneliness. |
| In spite of | Followed by a noun or gerund; shows contrast/concession | In spite of its many benefits, social media has been widely criticised for enabling the spread of false information. |
| Consequently | Shows a result or consequence | Consequently, many governments are now calling for stricter regulation of social media platforms. |
| As a consequence | Introduces the outcome or result of a previous situation | As a consequence, public trust in traditional media has declined significantly. |
| For this reason | Explains why something follows from what was previously stated | For this reason, digital literacy education in schools has become increasingly important. |
| On balance | Signals a final, balanced conclusion | On balance, it would appear that social media brings more benefits than drawbacks, provided it is used responsibly. |
| Taking all factors into consideration | Formal concluding phrase that signals a final verdict | Taking all factors into consideration, it is clear that society must find a way to harness the benefits of social media while minimising its risks. |
Model Writing Sample: The Impact of Social Media on Society
The following model essay is written to Cambridge B2 First (FCE) standard. Read it carefully, noting how each paragraph is structured and how the connectors are used.
[Introduction — Presents the topic objectively; no personal opinion]
In recent decades, social media has transformed the way people communicate, consume information, and interact with the world around them. While it is widely celebrated as one of the most significant technological advances of our time, its impact on society remains a deeply controversial subject.
[Body Paragraph 1 — Advantages, with development and an example]
On the one hand, social media offers undeniable advantages. It enables individuals to maintain contact with friends and family across vast distances and provides an accessible platform for sharing ideas on a global scale. Furthermore, it has proved to be an invaluable resource for small businesses, which can now reach potential customers worldwide at minimal cost. In addition to this, social media has given marginalised communities a powerful voice, facilitating important social movements such as those calling for greater equality and human rights.
[Body Paragraph 2 — Disadvantages, with development and an example]
On the other hand, the consequences of social media use are not without serious concern. It has been widely reported that excessive use of these platforms is strongly associated with anxiety, depression, and a distorted sense of self-worth among young people. Moreover, social media has been heavily criticised for enabling the rapid spread of misinformation, which can have dangerous real-world consequences.
[Conclusion — Balanced personal verdict using a formal concluding phrase]
On balance, whilst social media undoubtedly carries significant risks, its benefits to communication and social progress are considerable. Nevertheless, it is essential that both individuals and governments take responsibility for ensuring that these platforms are used safely and ethically.

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Comma Splice (Joining two independent clauses with only a comma)
❌ "Social media connects people around the world, it has also been linked to mental health problems."
✅ Correct: "Social media connects people around the world. However, it has also been linked to mental health problems."
Two complete sentences (independent clauses) cannot be joined with a comma alone. Use a full stop, a semicolon, or a suitable connector such as however, nevertheless, or yet.
Mistake 2: Forgetting the Comma After a Sentence Adverb
❌ "Furthermore social media has transformed the way businesses communicate with consumers."
✅ Correct: "Furthermore, social media has transformed the way businesses communicate with consumers."
When discourse markers such as Furthermore, However, Nevertheless, Consequently, and Moreover begin a sentence, they must always be followed by a comma.
Mistake 3: Confusing 'Despite' and 'In spite of' with 'Despite the fact that'
❌ "Despite social media has many advantages, it also carries serious risks."
✅ Correct: "Despite its many advantages, social media also carries serious risks."
Despite and in spite of must be followed by a noun, pronoun, or gerund — never directly by a clause with a subject and verb. If you want to use a full clause, write despite the fact that or although: "Despite the fact that social media has many advantages, it also carries serious risks."
Mistake 4: Using Informal Register in a Formal Essay
❌ "Loads of young people are totally addicted to social media and can't stop checking their phones."
✅ Correct: "A significant proportion of young people are reported to use social media excessively, which raises concerns about dependency and wellbeing."
For-and-against essays require a formal, impersonal register. Avoid contractions (can't, don't, it's), colloquial expressions (loads of, totally, check out), and direct personal address (you, we). Use formal vocabulary and passive structures instead.
Mistake 5: Giving a Personal Opinion in the Introduction
❌ "In this essay, I will show that social media is mostly harmful and people should use it less."
✅ Correct: "The impact of social media on modern society has become a subject of considerable debate, with strong arguments both in favour of and against its widespread use."
In a for-and-against essay, the introduction should present the topic neutrally. Reserve your personal verdict for the concluding paragraph.
