How to Write a For-and-Against Essay: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Remote Work
A for-and-against essay is a formal piece of writing in which you present both the positive and negative aspects of a topic in a balanced and objective way. This type of essay is common in academic writing, professional reports, and English language examinations such as the Cambridge B2 First (FCE).
In real life, this kind of writing appears in newspaper opinion columns, company policy documents, and online magazines. For example, a journalist might write a balanced article exploring whether working from home benefits employees and employers equally, or whether it creates new challenges for businesses.
In this lesson, you will learn how to structure a for-and-against essay about remote work, use appropriate formal language and linking devices, and avoid common mistakes that B2 learners frequently make.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. Overall Structure
A well-organised B2 for-and-against essay follows a clear four-paragraph structure:
- Paragraph 1 – Introduction: Introduce the topic and state that there are both advantages and disadvantages. Do not give your personal opinion here.
- Paragraph 2 – Advantages: Present two or three clear benefits with supporting reasons or examples.
- Paragraph 3 – Disadvantages: Present two or three clear drawbacks with supporting reasons or examples.
- Paragraph 4 – Conclusion: Summarise both sides and offer a balanced, reasoned personal verdict.
2. Writing a Strong Introduction
Your introduction should present the topic clearly and signal that the essay will consider both perspectives. Avoid stating your opinion immediately. A strong B2 introduction uses a general statement followed by a thesis sentence.
Formula: General statement about the topic + indication that arguments exist on both sides.
Example: In recent years, remote work has become increasingly common across many industries. While this arrangement offers a number of significant benefits, it also presents certain challenges that should not be overlooked.
3. Topic Sentences
Every body paragraph must begin with a clear topic sentence that tells the reader what the paragraph is about. This is followed by supporting evidence or an example, and then a brief explanation.
Formula for body paragraphs: Topic sentence → Supporting point → Example or explanation → Optional linking sentence to next idea.
4. Concession Clauses
At B2 level, you are expected to acknowledge the opposing side even within a paragraph. This shows critical thinking and maturity of argument. Use concession structures such as:
- While it is true that remote work reduces commuting time, it can also lead to professional isolation.
- Although employees may enjoy greater flexibility, managers often find it more difficult to monitor performance.
5. Passive Structures for Formal Register
Use passive voice to create an objective, impersonal tone, which is essential in formal essays.
- It is widely believed that remote work increases productivity.
- It has been demonstrated that employees who work from home report lower stress levels.
- Remote work is considered by many to be the future of employment.
6. Punctuation with Discourse Markers
Always place a comma after sentence adverbs when they appear at the start of a sentence. Failure to do so is one of the most common B2 errors.
- Furthermore, remote work can reduce company overheads significantly.
- Nevertheless, not all employees have access to a suitable home working environment.
- Consequently, many businesses have adopted a hybrid working model.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
The following table presents the most important connectors for a B2 for-and-against essay, organised by function.
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Furthermore | Adding a related point (formal) | Furthermore, remote workers often report higher levels of job satisfaction. |
| Moreover | Adding a stronger or additional point | Moreover, companies can reduce office costs considerably. |
| In addition to this | Adding supplementary information | In addition to this, employees save time by avoiding long commutes. |
| Nevertheless | Introducing a contrasting point despite what was said | Nevertheless, feelings of isolation can affect mental wellbeing. |
| Nonetheless | Similar to 'nevertheless'; slightly more formal | Nonetheless, the disadvantages must be carefully considered. |
| On the other hand | Presenting the opposing perspective | On the other hand, remote work can blur the boundary between personal and professional life. |
| Whereas | Direct contrast between two ideas in one sentence | Whereas office workers benefit from face-to-face interaction, remote employees may feel disconnected. |
| Despite the fact that | Conceding a point before contrasting it | Despite the fact that technology enables remote collaboration, some tasks require physical presence. |
| Consequently | Showing a result or consequence | Consequently, many employees have requested permanent flexible working arrangements. |
| As a consequence | Showing a result (slightly more formal variant) | As a consequence, productivity levels have risen in several sectors. |
| On balance | Weighing both sides in the conclusion | On balance, the benefits of remote work appear to outweigh the drawbacks. |
| Taking everything into consideration | Summarising all points before a final verdict | Taking everything into consideration, a hybrid model may represent the most practical solution. |
Model Writing Sample: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Remote Work
Read the following model essay carefully. Notice how it is organised, the formal register used throughout, and the range of linking devices.
— INTRODUCTION —
In recent years, remote work has become increasingly widespread across a broad range of industries. While this shift in working culture offers considerable advantages for both employees and employers, it also raises a number of concerns that deserve careful consideration.
— ADVANTAGES —
One of the most significant benefits of remote work is the flexibility it provides. Employees are able to organise their working hours more effectively, which frequently leads to improved productivity and reduced stress. Furthermore, working from home eliminates lengthy commutes, saving both time and money. Employers also benefit, as it has been demonstrated that remote working can substantially reduce office overheads.
— DISADVANTAGES —
On the other hand, remote work is not without its drawbacks. Many employees report feelings of professional isolation, as the absence of face-to-face interaction can negatively affect team cohesion and morale. Moreover, it can be considerably more difficult for managers to monitor performance and maintain clear communication. Whereas office environments provide clear boundaries between work and personal life, remote workers frequently struggle to disconnect at the end of the working day.
— CONCLUSION —
On balance, remote work offers genuine advantages in terms of flexibility and cost reduction; however, the challenges it presents, particularly regarding communication and wellbeing, should not be underestimated. It is therefore advisable for organisations to consider a hybrid approach that combines both working arrangements.

Model Text Annotations
- Introduction: Presents the topic generally and signals a balanced discussion without expressing a personal opinion prematurely.
- Advantages paragraph: Opens with a clear topic sentence, supports the argument with two developed points, and uses "Furthermore" to connect related ideas.
- Disadvantages paragraph: Opens with "On the other hand" to signal a shift in perspective. Uses "Moreover" and "Whereas" to develop and contrast ideas. No contractions are used throughout.
- Conclusion: Uses "On balance" to signal a final verdict. Offers a practical recommendation rather than simply repeating earlier points. Note the correct use of a semicolon before "however" to avoid a comma splice.

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Comma Splice (Joining Two Main Clauses with Only a Comma)
❌ Remote work offers many benefits, however it also has several disadvantages.
✅ Remote work offers many benefits; however, it also has several disadvantages.
Explanation: 'However' is a sentence adverb, not a conjunction. You cannot join two independent clauses with a comma alone. Use a semicolon before 'however' and a comma after it, or begin a new sentence.
Mistake 2: Missing Comma After a Sentence Adverb
❌ Furthermore remote work reduces commuting time significantly.
✅ Furthermore, remote work reduces commuting time significantly.
Explanation: Discourse markers such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', 'Nevertheless', 'Consequently', and 'Therefore' must always be followed by a comma when they introduce a sentence.
Mistake 3: Confusing 'Despite' and 'In Spite Of' with 'Despite the Fact That'
❌ Despite remote work is popular, it has several drawbacks.
✅ Despite its popularity, remote work has several drawbacks.
✅ Despite the fact that remote work is popular, it has several drawbacks.
Explanation: 'Despite' and 'in spite of' must be followed by a noun phrase or a gerund (-ing form), NOT by a subject and verb. If you wish to use a full clause, use 'despite the fact that' or 'although'.
Mistake 4: Using Informal Register in a Formal Essay
❌ Lots of people can't stand the idea of going back to the office.
✅ Many employees are reluctant to return to a traditional office environment.
Explanation: Contractions ('can't'), informal quantifiers ('lots of'), and phrasal verbs ('can't stand') are inappropriate in formal essays. Use formal alternatives: 'cannot', 'many', 'are reluctant to', 'are unwilling to'.
Mistake 5: Starting the Conclusion by Simply Repeating the Introduction
❌ In conclusion, remote work has advantages and disadvantages as I said at the beginning.
✅ On balance, whilst remote work offers significant benefits in terms of flexibility and cost efficiency, organisations must address the challenges of communication and employee wellbeing in order to maximise its potential.
Explanation: Your conclusion must synthesise the arguments and offer a reasoned verdict or recommendation. Do not simply restate what you wrote in the introduction using the same language.
