How to Write a For-and-Against Essay: The Advantages and Disadvantages of City Life
A for-and-against essay presents both sides of an issue in a balanced and objective way. Unlike an opinion essay, you do not simply argue one position — instead, you evaluate the advantages and disadvantages equally before offering a reasoned concluding verdict. This type of essay is extremely common in the Cambridge B2 First (FCE) examination and in real-life academic and professional writing.
The topic of city life is a classic example of a for-and-against essay because it genuinely has strong points on both sides. You might write this kind of essay for a school magazine, a university application, or an English language examination. Whatever the context, your goal is the same: to present a clear, well-organised, and balanced argument using formal vocabulary and advanced linking devices.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. The Four-Paragraph Structure
A B2 for-and-against essay follows a clear four-paragraph plan. Each paragraph has a specific job to do:
- Paragraph 1 — Introduction: Introduce the topic generally and state that there are arguments on both sides. Do not give your opinion here.
- Paragraph 2 — Advantages: Present two or three clear advantages with supporting examples or explanations.
- Paragraph 3 — Disadvantages: Present two or three clear disadvantages with supporting examples or explanations.
- Paragraph 4 — Conclusion: Summarise both sides and give your own balanced or reasoned verdict.
2. Topic Sentences
Every body paragraph must begin with a clear topic sentence that tells the reader exactly what the paragraph is about. Do not begin a paragraph with a specific detail — begin with the main idea.
❌ There are many good transport links in cities. (This jumps straight to a detail.)
✅ Living in a city offers a number of significant advantages. (This is a clear topic sentence that introduces the paragraph.)
3. Formal Register — No Contractions or Informal Language
A for-and-against essay requires a formal, impersonal register. This means you must avoid contractions, slang, and phrasal verbs. Use full verb forms and formal vocabulary throughout.
- Write do not, not don't
- Write cannot, not can't
- Write investigate, not look into
- Write tolerate, not put up with
- Write consequently, not so
4. Passive Structures for Objectivity
Using passive verb forms makes your writing sound more impersonal and academic, which is appropriate for a formal essay.
- It is widely argued that city life offers unrivalled opportunities.
- It has been suggested that urban pollution poses serious health risks.
- City centres are often considered to be centres of culture and innovation.
5. Concession Clauses
A concession clause acknowledges the opposing point before developing your own. This demonstrates sophisticated thinking and is highly valued at B2 level.
- While it is true that cities offer excellent career prospects, the cost of living can be extremely high.
- Despite the vibrancy of urban life, many residents struggle with noise and overcrowding.
- Although cities provide world-class cultural facilities, access to green space is often limited.
6. Punctuation with Discourse Markers
Always place a comma after a sentence adverb or linking phrase at the start of a sentence. Failing to do so is one of the most common punctuation errors at B2 level.
- Furthermore, cities provide access to world-class healthcare facilities.
- Nevertheless, the high cost of accommodation remains a serious concern.
- In conclusion, city life has both significant benefits and notable drawbacks.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
The connectors below are essential for writing a well-structured, cohesive B2 for-and-against essay. Study the function and example sentence for each one carefully.
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Furthermore | Adding a related point (formal) | Furthermore, cities tend to offer a wider range of employment opportunities. |
| Moreover | Adding a stronger or more important point | Moreover, urban residents benefit from excellent public transport networks. |
| In addition to this | Adding another point in a formal way | In addition to this, cities are home to internationally renowned cultural institutions. |
| Nevertheless | Introducing a contrasting point (concession) | Nevertheless, the high cost of living in major cities cannot be ignored. |
| Nonetheless | Introducing a contrasting point (similar to nevertheless) | Nonetheless, many people find the pace of city life overwhelming. |
| Whereas | Direct contrast between two ideas in one sentence | Whereas rural areas offer peace and quiet, cities provide excitement and variety. |
| Despite / In spite of | Conceding a point (followed by a noun or -ing form) | Despite the many advantages, urban pollution remains a significant problem. |
| While it is true that | Acknowledging an opposing point before contrasting it | While it is true that cities offer career opportunities, competition for jobs is fierce. |
| On the one hand ... on the other hand | Presenting two contrasting sides of an argument | On the one hand, cities are exciting and dynamic. On the other hand, they can be stressful and expensive. |
| Consequently | Showing a result or consequence | Consequently, many young professionals choose to relocate to urban areas. |
| As a consequence | Showing a result (slightly more formal alternative) | As a consequence, traffic congestion in city centres has reached critical levels. |
| Due to / Owing to | Giving a reason (followed by a noun or noun phrase) | Owing to the density of the population, noise pollution is a persistent issue. |
| On balance | Introducing a final, balanced conclusion | On balance, the advantages of city life appear to outweigh the disadvantages. |
| Taking all factors into consideration | Formal way to begin a concluding verdict | Taking all factors into consideration, city life suits those who value opportunity over tranquillity. |

The Advantages and Disadvantages of City Life
[Introduction]
City life is a subject that provokes strong opinions. Millions of people around the world choose to live in urban environments, yet the question of whether city life is truly beneficial or largely problematic remains a matter of considerable debate. There are compelling arguments on both sides of the discussion.
[Advantages — Paragraph 2]
On the one hand, cities offer a remarkable range of opportunities that are simply unavailable in rural areas. Furthermore, urban residents have access to world-class healthcare, higher education institutions, and an extensive public transport network. It is widely argued that cities are centres of innovation and culture, providing residents with theatres, galleries, and international cuisine. Consequently, many young professionals are drawn to urban areas in search of career advancement and personal development.
[Disadvantages — Paragraph 3]
On the other hand, city life is not without its significant drawbacks. Owing to the high density of the population, noise pollution and overcrowding are persistent concerns for urban residents. Moreover, the cost of accommodation in major cities has risen dramatically, making it increasingly difficult for ordinary people to afford suitable housing. In addition to this, the fast pace of city life is frequently associated with elevated levels of stress and anxiety.
[Conclusion]
Taking all factors into consideration, city life presents both exceptional opportunities and considerable challenges. On balance, it would appear that cities are best suited to those who prioritise career prospects and cultural experiences over peace and affordability.

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Comma Splice (Joining two sentences with only a comma)
❌ City life has many advantages, it also has serious disadvantages.
✅ City life has many advantages; however, it also has serious disadvantages.
Explanation: You cannot join two complete sentences with just a comma. Use a semicolon + connector, or start a new sentence.
Mistake 2: Missing Comma After a Sentence Adverb
❌ Furthermore cities provide access to excellent public transport.
✅ Furthermore, cities provide access to excellent public transport.
Explanation: When a sentence adverb such as "Furthermore", "Nevertheless", "Moreover", or "Consequently" begins a sentence, it must be followed by a comma.
Mistake 3: Confusing 'Despite' and 'In spite of' with 'Although'
❌ Despite city life is expensive, many people choose to live there.
✅ Despite the high cost of city life, many people choose to live there.
Explanation: "Despite" and "in spite of" must be followed by a noun or noun phrase, NOT by a subject + verb. Use "Although" or "Even though" if you want to introduce a full clause: "Although city life is expensive, many people choose to live there."
Mistake 4: Using Informal Language or Contractions in a Formal Essay
❌ It's really hard to put up with the noise in cities, and lots of people can't cope.
✅ It is extremely difficult to tolerate the noise levels in cities, and many residents find it challenging to manage.
Explanation: In a formal for-and-against essay, avoid contractions (it's, can't), informal intensifiers (really, lots of), and phrasal verbs (put up with, cope with). Replace them with formal vocabulary and full verb forms.
Mistake 5: Giving a Strong Personal Opinion in the Introduction
❌ In my opinion, city life is definitely much better than living in the countryside.
✅ The question of whether city life is preferable to rural living remains a subject of considerable debate.
Explanation: In a for-and-against essay, the introduction should introduce the topic neutrally, not immediately state your personal view. Save your reasoned verdict for the conclusion.
