How to Write an Article About the Advantages of Learning a Language
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a clear, engaging article for an English-language website or school magazine. The task is to describe the advantages of learning a new language. This is a very common B1 writing task, and it appears in the Cambridge B1 Preliminary (PET) examination as a Task 2 article.
In real life, people write articles like this for school magazines, travel blogs, and online learning websites. A good B1 article should have a catchy title, an interesting opening question, two or three well-developed body paragraphs with reasons and examples, and a strong closing recommendation.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Organise your article into clear paragraphs with a logical structure.
- Use intermediate linking words such as however, in addition, and as a result correctly.
- Write complex sentences using relative clauses and conditionals.
- Avoid the most common B1 writing mistakes.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. Paragraph Structure for a B1 Article
A well-organised B1 article should have three to four paragraphs. Follow this structure carefully:
- Paragraph 1 – Introduction: Use a catchy title and an engaging rhetorical question to hook the reader. State the topic clearly.
- Paragraph 2 – First main advantage: Give a clear reason with an example or personal experience.
- Paragraph 3 – Second main advantage: Give another reason, using a linking word to connect it to your first point.
- Paragraph 4 – Conclusion: Give your opinion and a clear recommendation to the reader.
2. Writing Complex Sentences
At B1 level, you should avoid short, repetitive sentences. Instead, combine two ideas using subordinate clauses, relative clauses, and linking words. Compare these examples:
❌ Learning a language is useful. You can travel to other countries.
✅ Learning a language is extremely useful because it allows you to communicate with people when you travel to other countries.
❌ I started learning Spanish. I got a better job.
✅ As soon as I started learning Spanish, I found it much easier to get a better job.
3. Relative Clauses
Use relative clauses with who, which, that, and where to add extra information and make your sentences more sophisticated.
- Learning a language is a skill that can open many doors in your career.
- I met a French student who helped me practise my speaking.
- Paris is a city where knowing French makes your trip far more enjoyable.
4. Using Conditionals
Conditionals are very effective for giving advice and recommendations in articles.
- First conditional (real possibility): If you learn a second language, you will have more job opportunities.
- Second conditional (general advice): If I were you, I would definitely start learning a language today.
5. Punctuation with Linking Adverbs
When you use linking adverbs such as However, Therefore, and In addition at the beginning of a sentence, always put a comma after them.
- ✅ However, learning a language also takes a lot of time and effort.
- ✅ In addition, speaking another language can improve your memory.
- ✅ Therefore, I strongly recommend that everyone tries to learn a new language.
