How to Write About Your Favourite Place in English
Do you have a special place that you love to visit? Maybe it is a beautiful park near your home, a busy market in your city, or a quiet beach you visited on holiday. In English, we often write short descriptions of places we love — in messages to friends, in travel blogs, or in simple reviews.
In this lesson, you will learn how to describe your favourite place clearly and naturally. You will practise writing in short paragraphs, using linking words to connect your ideas, and using the correct verb tenses to talk about what the place is like and why you love it.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. Organise Your Writing into Clear Paragraphs
A good short description of a place has two or three paragraphs. Follow this simple plan:
- Paragraph 1 — Introduction: Name the place and say where it is. Give one or two general sentences about it.
- Paragraph 2 — Details: Describe what you can see, do, or eat there. Explain why you love it.
- Paragraph 3 — Personal connection (optional): Say when you go there, who you go with, or how you feel when you are there.
2. Use the Correct Verb Tenses
- Use the present simple to describe what the place is like now: "The park is very big and quiet."
- Use the past simple to talk about a specific visit: "Last summer, I went there with my family."
- Use going to or will for future plans: "I am going to visit again next month."
3. Use Commas Correctly with Time Clauses
When a sentence begins with a time word like when, before, or after, use a comma after the introductory clause.
✅ When I arrive at the market, I always feel excited.
✅ After we had lunch, we walked along the beach.
✅ Before I go home, I usually buy some fresh bread.
4. Give Reasons and Results
Use because to give a reason and so to give a result. Do not confuse them — they work in opposite directions!
✅ "I love the park because it is very peaceful." (reason follows)
✅ "The park is very peaceful, so I go there every weekend." (result follows)
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| because | Gives a reason | I love this café because the coffee is delicious. |
| so | Gives a result | The beach is beautiful, so we go there every summer. |
| and | Adds information | The park is big and very peaceful. |
| but | Shows contrast | The market is busy, but I really enjoy it. |
| although | Shows a simple contrast or concession | Although it is small, the café is very cosy. |
| when | Talks about a time or situation | When I visit the park, I feel very relaxed. |
| before | Shows what happens first in a sequence | Before I go home, I always sit by the fountain. |
| after | Shows what happens next in a sequence | After we had lunch, we walked along the river. |
| also | Adds an extra point | There is a lovely café there. There are also beautiful gardens. |
| then | Shows the next action in a sequence | We had ice cream and then we walked home. |
Model Writing Sample: My Favourite Place — Riverside Park
Read this short description carefully. Notice how it is organised and how linking words are used.
---
My Favourite Place
My favourite place is Riverside Park, which is near my home in the city. It is a large, green park with a long river and lots of old trees. Although it is in the centre of the city, it is very quiet and peaceful.
When I visit the park, I usually walk along the river and sit on a bench. I love it because it helps me relax after a busy day at work. There is also a small café where I sometimes have a coffee and read my book.
I go to the park every weekend with my dog, so we both know the paths very well. I am going to go there again this Saturday because the weather will be lovely.

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
❌ I love the park so it is very relaxing.
✅ I love the park because it is very relaxing. — Use because to give a reason. Use so to give a result, not a reason. The reason comes after because.
❌ When I arrive at the beach I feel very happy.
✅ When I arrive at the beach, I feel very happy. — When a sentence starts with a time clause (When I arrive at the beach), you must put a comma after it before the main clause.
❌ Last weekend I goed to the park with my sister.
✅ Last weekend, I went to the park with my sister. — Go is an irregular verb. The past simple form is went, not goed. Also, add a comma after the time phrase Last weekend.
❌ Although the market is busy but I love it.
✅ Although the market is busy, I love it. — Do not use although and but together in the same sentence. Use one or the other. Although already shows contrast, so but is not needed.
❌ i think its a beautiful place and i visit every weekend.
✅ I think it's a beautiful place and I visit every weekend. — Always use a capital letter for I. Remember to use an apostrophe in contractions: it's = it is.
