How to Describe a Person You Admire in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a short description of a person you admire. This is a very common writing task in English. You might write this kind of text in a school assignment, an informal message to a friend, or even a short paragraph for a blog or social media post.
When you describe a person you admire, you explain who they are, what they do, and why you admire them. You can write about a famous person, a family member, a teacher, or a friend. The important thing is to give clear reasons and use good connecting words.
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a clear, well-organised paragraph (or short email to a friend) of 60–90 words that describes a person you admire.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
1. Organise Your Writing into Clear Paragraphs
A good description of a person you admire has two or three short paragraphs. Here is a simple structure to follow:
- Paragraph 1 – Introduction: Who is this person? What is their name? What do they do?
- Paragraph 2 – Details: What makes them special? What have they done? Why do you admire them?
- Paragraph 3 – Closing: How does this person make you feel? What do you hope to do in the future because of them?
2. Use the Present Simple for Facts and Feelings
Use the present simple to talk about who the person is and what they do regularly.
My grandmother lives in a small village. She works very hard every day. I admire her because she is always kind and patient.
3. Use the Past Simple to Talk About What They Did
Use the past simple to describe things the person did in the past. Remember to use irregular verbs correctly.
She worked as a nurse for thirty years. She helped many people. She never gave up, although life was difficult.
4. Use Connecting Words to Join Your Ideas
Do not write short, separate sentences one after another. Use connecting words like because, so, and, but, and although to join your ideas together naturally.
I admire her because she is very kind. She works very hard, so she is tired in the evening, but she always has time for her family.
5. Use a Comma After an Introductory Time Clause
When you begin a sentence with a time word such as when, before, or after, always put a comma before the main part of the sentence.
When I was a child, my grandmother told me wonderful stories.
After she retired, she started painting beautiful pictures.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
These connecting words will help you write longer, more natural sentences. Study the table below carefully.

| before | Shows what happened first | Before she became a teacher, she studied for many years. |
| after | Shows what happened next | After she retired, she started writing books. |
| also | Adds another point | She is very talented. She is also very humble. |
| then | Shows the next thing in order | She studied medicine, and then she moved to a new city. |

Common Writing Mistakes to Avoid
Here are four mistakes that A2 writers often make. Study each one carefully so you do not repeat them in your own writing.
❌ I admire her so she is very kind.
✅ I admire her because she is very kind. — Use because to give a reason. Use so to show a result. These two words are not the same. Ask yourself: Am I explaining WHY? Use because. Am I explaining WHAT HAPPENED as a result? Use so.
❌ When I was young I learned to read from her.
✅ When I was young, I learned to read from her. — When you begin a sentence with when, before, or after, you must put a comma after the introductory clause, before the main part of the sentence.
❌ She work as a nurse for many years and she help many people.
✅ She worked as a nurse for many years and she helped many people. — When you talk about things in the past, use the past simple. Add -ed to regular verbs. For example: work → worked, help → helped, retire → retired.
❌ Although she is busy but she always has time for me.
✅ Although she is busy, she always has time for me. — Do not use although and but together in the same sentence. Choose one or the other. Although already shows contrast, so you do not need but as well.
