Example: big / have / school / a / I
Answer: I have a big school.

How to Write About Your School in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a short description of your school in English. We write about our school to share information with friends, pen pals, or teachers. For example, you might write a short message to a new friend in another country to tell them about your school. This is a very common and useful writing task for beginners!
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write simple, clear sentences about your school using correct punctuation, capital letters, and basic linking words.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Word Order (Subject + Verb + Object)
Every English sentence needs a subject (who or what), a verb (the action), and often an object (what or who receives the action). Always follow this order.
| Subject | Verb | Object / Extra Information |
|---|---|---|
| My school | is | big. |
| I | like | my English class. |
| My teacher | is | very kind. |
| We | have | a big library. |
| My favourite subject | is | Maths. |
Rule 2: Capital Letters
Always use a capital letter for:
- The first word of every sentence. (My school is big.)
- The word I. (I like my school.)
- Names of people and places. (My teacher is called Mrs Ahmed. I live in London.)
- Names of school subjects. (English, Maths, Science, Art)
- Days of the week and months. (Monday, September)
Rule 3: Full Stops and Punctuation
- Put a full stop (.) at the end of every sentence.
- Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list. (I like Maths, Science, and Art.)
- Use a question mark (?) at the end of a question. (What is your favourite subject?)
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Linking words connect your sentences and ideas. They make your writing flow naturally. Learn these four important connectors for A1 writing.
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds information | My school is big and it is very clean. |
| but | Shows a contrast or difference | I like Art but I don't like Maths. |
| because | Gives a reason | I love school because my friends are there. |
| so | Shows a result | My school has a library, so I read books there. |
