How to Write About Your Pet in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a short description of your pet in English. Writing about your pet is a great way to practise simple sentences and useful vocabulary. You can use this type of writing in a school project, a message to a friend, or a short post online.
When we write about a pet, we usually include:
- The name of the pet
- The type of animal (dog, cat, rabbit, fish, etc.)
- What it looks like (colour, size)
- What it likes to do
- Why you love your pet
Even if you do not have a pet, you can write about a pet you would like to have, or a friend's or family member's pet. Let's get started!
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Use Subject + Verb + Object Word Order
Every English sentence needs a subject (who or what) and a verb (the action). This is the most important rule for beginners.
| Subject | Verb | Object / Extra information |
|---|---|---|
| My dog | is | very small. |
| She | has | brown eyes. |
| My cat | likes | to sleep. |
| I | love | my rabbit. |
Rule 2: Capital Letters
Always use a capital letter for:
- The first word of every sentence — My cat is white.
- The word I — I love my dog.
- Names of people and pets — Her name is Bella.
- Days of the week and months — Monday, January
Rule 3: Full Stops and Commas
- Use a full stop (.) at the end of every sentence.
- Use a comma (,) to separate things in a list — She is small, white, and fluffy.
Rule 4: Keep Sentences Short and Clear
At A1 level, short sentences are best. Try to write sentences with 5–9 words. Short sentences are easy to read and easy to write correctly.
✅ Good: My dog is brown and white.
❌ Too long and difficult: My dog who is called Max is brown and white and he really likes to run in the park every morning.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Linking words help you join two ideas together. At A1 level, you only need four important linking words. Learn these well!
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds two similar ideas together | My cat is white and very fluffy. |
| but | Shows a contrast or difference | My dog is small but very loud. |
| because | Gives a reason | I love my cat because she is very friendly. |
| so | Shows a result | My rabbit is hungry, so I give him food. |
