How to Write About Your Family in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a short paragraph about your family. This is a very common writing task in English. You might write about your family in a school exercise, a message to a new friend, or an online profile.
When you write about your family, you describe the people in your family, their names, their ages, and what they do. You can also say what they like. This is a great way to introduce yourself and the people you love.
Real-life examples of when you write about your family:
- A short message to a new pen pal
- A personal profile on a language learning app
- A class writing exercise at school
- A postcard to a friend
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Use the correct word order (Subject + Verb + Object)
In English, every sentence follows a clear pattern. Always start with the subject (who), then the verb (the action), then the object or extra information.
| Subject | Verb | Object / Extra Information |
|---|---|---|
| I | have | one brother. |
| My sister | is | twelve years old. |
| My dad | works | in a hospital. |
| My mum | likes | cooking. |
Rule 2: Use capital letters correctly
Capital letters are very important in English. Use a capital letter in these situations:
- Start of a sentence: My family is small.
- The word "I": I have two sisters. (Always write "I", never "i")
- Names of people: Her name is Sofia.
- Names of places: We live in Madrid.
- Days and months: My brother's birthday is in March.
Rule 3: Use full stops and commas correctly
- Use a full stop (.) at the end of every sentence.
- Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list: I have a mum, a dad, and a brother.
- Do not forget the full stop at the end. Every sentence must end with one.
Rule 4: Keep your sentences short and clear
At A1 level, short sentences are best. Aim for sentences with 5 to 9 words. Short sentences are easy to read and easy to write correctly.
- ✅ Good: My brother is ten years old. (6 words)
- ✅ Good: She likes football and music. (5 words)
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Linking words connect your sentences and ideas. They make your writing flow naturally. At A1 level, use these four key linking words:
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds information (joins two similar ideas) | I have a sister and a brother. |
| but | Shows a contrast (joins two different ideas) | My dad is quiet, but my mum is very funny. |
| because | Gives a reason (explains why) | I love my grandma because she is very kind. |
| so | Shows a result (says what happens next) | My sister loves animals, so she has a cat. |
