How to Write About Your Daily Routine in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write about your daily routine. A daily routine describes the things you do every day — for example, when you wake up, when you eat, and when you go to bed.
People write about their daily routines in:
- Short messages to friends
- Emails to pen pals
- School homework tasks
- Simple personal profiles
This is a very common and useful writing task in English. Let's learn how to do it step by step!
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Use the Correct Word Order
In English, always use this basic word order:
Subject + Verb + Object / Time Word
- I + wake up + at 7 o'clock.
- I + eat + breakfast at home.
- I + go + to school at 8 o'clock.
Always put the subject first, then the verb, then the object or time word.
Rule 2: Use Capital Letters
You must use a capital letter for:
- The word I — always a capital letter: I wake up early.
- The first word of every sentence: I go to school.
- Names of people and places: My name is Maria. I live in London.
- Days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Rule 3: Use Full Stops and Commas
- Use a full stop (.) at the end of every sentence: I eat lunch at school.
- Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list: I eat bread, eggs, and milk for breakfast.
- Use a comma (,) after a time phrase at the start of a sentence: In the morning, I brush my teeth.
Rule 4: Use Simple Present Tense
When you write about your daily routine, use the simple present tense. This tells the reader what you do every day.
- I wake up at 7 o'clock.
- I have lunch at 1 o'clock.
- I go to bed at 10 o'clock.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Linking words help you join your sentences together. At A1 level, use these four important connectors:
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds more information | I eat breakfast and I drink orange juice. |
| but | Shows a contrast or difference | I like school but I don't like Mondays. |
| because | Gives a reason | I go to bed early because I am tired. |
| so | Shows a result | I wake up late so I run to school. |
| then | Shows the next action in a sequence | I have a shower then I get dressed. |
| after that | Shows what happens next | I eat lunch. After that, I go to class. |
