How to Write a Personal Introduction in English
A personal introduction is a short piece of writing about you. You write your name, your age, where you live, and what you like. People write personal introductions on websites, in class, in emails, and on social media profiles.
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a clear, simple introduction about yourself in English.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Word Order (Subject + Verb + Object)
In English, we always follow this order in a sentence:
| Subject (Who?) | Verb (Action / State) | Object or Information |
|---|---|---|
| I | am | twenty years old. |
| I | live | in London. |
| I | like | football. |
| My name | is | Sara. |
Important: Never write the verb before the subject in a simple statement. Keep the order: Subject → Verb → Information.
Rule 2: Capital Letters
You must use a capital letter in these situations:
- The first word of every sentence: My name is Tom.
- The word I is always a capital letter: He and I are friends.
- Names of people: Sara, Ahmed, Maria
- Names of cities, countries, and nationalities: London, Brazil, Spanish
- Days of the week: Monday, Friday, Sunday
- Months of the year: January, August, December
Rule 3: Full Stops, Commas, and Question Marks
- Use a full stop (.) at the end of every sentence: I am from Spain.
- Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list: I like music, football, and films.
- Use a question mark (?) at the end of a question: What is your name?
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Linking words connect two ideas in one sentence. They make your writing longer and more interesting. Study these four important connectors:
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds one idea to another idea (both are positive or similar) | I like music and I like dancing. |
| but | Shows a contrast or difference between two ideas | I like tea but I do not like coffee. |
| because | Gives a reason for something | I study English because it is useful. |
| so | Shows a result of something | I love food so I cook every day. |
