Exercise 1
Arrange the words in the correct order to form a proper English sentence about your favourite place.
Example: park / go / I / to / the / like
Answer: I like to go to the park.

How to Describe Your Favourite Place in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a short description of your favourite place. A favourite place is somewhere you love to go. It can be a park, a café, a beach, a room in your home, or any place that makes you happy.
We write descriptions of places in postcards, messages to friends, class assignments, and travel journals. This is a very common and useful writing task in everyday life.
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to write 5–8 simple sentences about a place you love.
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Use the Correct Word Order
In English, we follow this basic pattern:
Subject + Verb + Object / Description
- Subject = who or what the sentence is about (I, It, The park)
- Verb = the action or state (is, like, have, go)
- Object / Description = more information (very big, a lake, beautiful flowers)
Examples:
- I / like / the park. → I like the park.
- It / is / very quiet. → It is very quiet.
- The café / has / big windows. → The café has big windows.
Rule 2: Always Use a Capital Letter at the Start of a Sentence
Every new sentence must start with a capital letter.
- ❌ the park is near my house.
- ✅ The park is near my house.
Rule 3: Always End a Sentence with a Full Stop
Every sentence must end with a full stop (.).
- ❌ I love the beach
- ✅ I love the beach.
Rule 4: Capitalise Names, 'I', and Special Nouns
Always use a capital letter for:
- The word I → I like it.
- Names of places → London, Hyde Park, the River Thames
- Names of people → Maria, Tom
- Days and months → Monday, January
Rule 5: Use Commas in Lists
When you write a list of three or more things, use a comma between each item.
- The park has trees, flowers, and a lake.
- It is quiet, clean, and beautiful.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Connectors join your sentences together and make your writing easier to read. At A1 level, use these four key connectors:
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds more information | The park is big and it is very green. |
| but | Shows a contrast or difference | I love the café but it is very small. |
| because | Gives a reason | I like the beach because it is calm. |
| so | Shows a result | It is near my home so I go every day. |
