How to Describe Your Favourite Person in English
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a short description of your favourite person. Your favourite person can be a family member, a friend, or someone you admire. This type of writing is very common in everyday English. You might write it in a school exercise, a personal profile, or a message to a friend.
In this lesson, you will learn how to:
- Write simple sentences about a person
- Use capital letters and full stops correctly
- Connect your sentences with basic linking words
- Describe what a person looks like and what they like doing
Essential Writing Rules and Sentence Structure
Rule 1: Every Sentence Follows This Pattern
At A1 level, every sentence should follow this simple pattern:
Subject + Verb + Object or Information
Look at these examples:
- She + is + my mother.
- He + has + brown eyes.
- My sister + likes + cooking.
- She + is + very kind.
Keep your sentences short. Aim for 5 to 9 words per sentence. Short sentences are clear and easy to read.
Rule 2: Capital Letters
Always use a capital letter for:
- The first word of every sentence → She is my best friend.
- The word "I" → I love my grandmother.
- Names of people → Her name is Maria.
- Names of countries and cities → He lives in London.
- Days and months → Her birthday is in March.
Rule 3: Full Stops and Commas
- Put a full stop (.) at the end of every sentence.
- Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list → She is kind, funny, and helpful.
- Use a comma (,) after a time phrase at the start of a sentence → In the morning, she makes breakfast.
Useful Linking Words (Connectors)
Linking words connect your sentences and ideas. At A1 level, learn these four important connectors:
| Connector | Function / Use | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds more information | She is kind and very funny. |
| but | Shows a contrast or difference | He is quiet but very friendly. |
| because | Gives a reason | I love her because she helps me. |
| so | Shows a result | He is funny, so I laugh a lot. |
Remember: Do not start every sentence with the same word. Try to mix these connectors to make your writing more interesting.
