Important Differences & Confusing Words
Study vs Learn
These two verbs are very similar, but they are used in slightly different ways.
Study means to spend time working on a subject — reading, practising, and preparing.
Learn means to successfully get new knowledge or a new skill.
Think of it this way: you study to learn!
- I study maths for two hours every evening. (= I work on maths)
- I learn new words every day in English class. (= I gain new knowledge)
Lesson vs Class vs Subject
These three words are easy to confuse for beginners.
- A lesson is one period of teaching at a specific time. (We have an English lesson at 9 am.)
- A class can mean a group of students, or it can also mean a lesson (used informally). (There are 25 students in my class. / I love my English class.)
- A subject is the area of knowledge you study, such as maths, science, or history. (My favourite subject is art.)
Pen vs Pencil
- A pen uses ink. You cannot erase pen easily. You use it for final writing.
- A pencil uses graphite (grey lead). You can erase it with a rubber. You use it for drawing and rough work.
Board vs Desk
- A board is on the wall at the front of the classroom. The teacher writes on it.
- A desk is the table where a student sits and works.
Common Mistakes
❌ I go to the school every day.
✅ I go to school every day. — We say "go to school" without "the" when we talk about going to school as a student.
❌ I do my homeworks every evening.
✅ I do my homework every evening. — "Homework" is an uncountable noun in English. It has no plural form. Never add an "s".
❌ The teacher learns me English.
✅ The teacher teaches me English. — A teacher teaches students. Students learn from teachers. These two verbs have different meanings.
❌ I study in a classroom with 20 students classmates.
✅ I study in a classroom with 20 classmates. — "Classmates" already means students who are in the same class. You do not need to add "students" before it.
❌ My favourite subject is the English.
✅ My favourite subject is English. — We do not use "the" before school subjects in English.
❌ She writes with a pen on her notebook.
✅ She writes in her notebook. — We write in a notebook, not on it. We write on paper or on the board.
