Reading Strategies & Comprehension Tips
Skimming for the Main Idea
Read the passage quickly — in about 30 seconds — without stopping at difficult words. Ask yourself: What is this text about? You will see it is about a person and her job. This is skimming.
Scanning for Specific Information
Exam questions often ask about details like times, places, or names. For example, if a question asks "Where does Priya work?", scan the text quickly for a place name. You will find Bristol and animal shelter very fast. Do not read every word — look only for the key detail.
Understanding "but"
The word but shows a contrast — two opposite ideas. Look at this sentence: "It is hard work, but she loves it." This tells you the job is difficult AND she is happy. In comprehension questions, both parts of a "but" sentence are important.
Using Context for New Words
If you do not know the word glamorous, look at the sentence around it: "It is not a glamorous job, but Priya is happy." The contrast with "happy" and the context of cleaning animal rooms helps you guess it means something like "exciting" or "fancy."
Common Reading Pitfalls & Traps
Trap 1: Priya is unhappy about her salary
The text says Priya "does not earn a lot of money." Some students think this means she is sad or has a problem. But the next sentence says "that is okay for her." She is NOT unhappy. Read the full sentence — do not stop after the first idea.
Trap 2: Priya already is a veterinarian
The text says she wants to study to become a veterinarian. This is a future plan, not her current job. Right now, she works at the shelter. Be careful with words like wants to, would like to, and one day — they talk about the future, not now.
Trap 3: Confusing "patient" (adjective) with "patient" (noun)
In English, patient has two meanings. As a noun, a patient is a person who visits a doctor. As an adjective — which is how it is used here — it means calm and not in a hurry. The context (Priya working with shy dogs) tells you the correct meaning.
Trap 4: The park is her workplace
Priya takes dogs to a park for walks, but she does not work at the park. Her workplace is the animal shelter. The park is only a place she visits as part of her job.
