Reading Strategies & Comprehension Tips
Skimming for the Main Idea
Read the passage quickly — only 20 seconds — and ask yourself: What is this text mainly about? Do not read every word. Look at the first sentence of each paragraph. You will quickly see that it is about a woman who enjoys staying home on a rainy day.
Scanning for Specific Details
If a question asks you what Priya eats or what Carlos brings, do not read everything again. Look for food words (soup, bread, chocolate) or the name Carlos. Jump directly to that part of the text.
Understanding the Order of Events
This passage uses time words: first, after one hour, in the afternoon, at seven o'clock. These words help you understand what happens first, second, and last. Always look for time words to follow the story.
Guessing Unknown Words
If you do not know the word delicious, look at the sentence around it: "It is warm and delicious." The word warm is about food. So delicious probably means something good about food — and it does! It means very tasty.
Common Reading Pitfalls & Traps
Trap 1: Confusing "heavy" with "big"
Heavy rain does not mean the rain is big or large. In English, we say heavy rain to mean there is a lot of rain and it falls fast and hard. Do not translate it directly from your language — it may be different!
Trap 2: Who brings the board game?
A common mistake is to think Priya has the board game. Read carefully: "He arrives with a board game and some chocolate." The word he means Carlos. Carlos brings the board game, not Priya.
Trap 3: Does Priya go outside?
The last sentence says: "She does not go outside at all!" Some students think she goes outside when the rain stops because she opens the window. But opening a window is not the same as going outside. She stays in her flat all day.
Trap 4: The word "flat"
In British English, a flat is an apartment. It does not mean something is not tall or not round. If you see this word in a text, think home / apartment, not the adjective flat (like a flat surface).
