On Saturday morning, the Okafor family drove to Seaview Beach. There were five of them: Mum, Dad, teenagers Zara and Kofi, and little Bisi, who was six years old. The beach was about an hour away. They left home early because they wanted to find a good spot near the water.
When they arrived, the beach was already busy. Zara and Kofi carried the chairs and the big blue umbrella. Dad had the cool bag with sandwiches, fruit, and cold lemonade. Bisi ran straight to the water, but Mum called her back. “Wait! Sunscreen first!” she said. Bisi was not happy, but she waited.
After lunch, the children made a large sandcastle near the rocks. Then Kofi found a small crab under a stone and everyone came to look. At four o’clock, dark clouds came and it started to rain. They packed everything quickly and ran to the car. In the car, Bisi fell asleep immediately. “Same time next weekend?” asked Dad. Everyone laughed and said yes.

Reading Strategies & Comprehension Tips
Scanning for Names and Numbers
This passage has several names (Zara, Kofi, Bisi, Mum, Dad) and numbers (five people, one hour, four o'clock, six years old). When a question asks about who did something or when something happened, scan the text quickly for a name or a number. Do not re-read the whole passage every time.
Skimming for the Main Idea
Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph quickly. This tells you the main topic of each paragraph. Paragraph one is about the journey. Paragraph two is about arriving at the beach. Paragraph three is about the afternoon and going home.
Understanding Order of Events
Look for time words to understand the sequence: On Saturday morning, When they arrived, After lunch, At four o'clock. These words help you understand what happened first, second, and last without getting confused.
Inferring Feelings
The passage does not always say how a character feels directly. For example, it says Bisi "ran straight to the water". This shows she was excited, even though the word "excited" is not in the text. Look for actions that tell you about feelings.
Common Reading Pitfalls & Traps
Confusing the Characters' Jobs
Be careful about who carried what. Zara and Kofi carried the chairs and umbrella. Dad carried the cool bag. Students sometimes mix these up in questions. Re-read paragraph two carefully if you are not sure.
The Word "spot"
In everyday English, spot can mean a small dot or a mark on the skin. Here, however, it means a place. Read the sentence around the word to understand which meaning is correct: "they wanted to find a good spot near the water" — clearly a place, not a dot.
Why Did They Leave Early?
Some students think the family left home early because the beach was far away. The text says they left early because they wanted to find a good spot. The distance (one hour) is mentioned separately. These are two different pieces of information — do not mix them together.
Did Bisi Swim?
Bisi ran to the water, but Mum called her back for sunscreen. The text does not say she swam. Be careful not to assume something happened if the text does not clearly state it.
